How to Install and Debloat JDownloader 2

JDownloader 2 is a free download manager. It splits files to speed things up, much like IDM, and it can handle captchas, wait times, and host limits on its own. This guide walks through a clean installation and the steps to permanently kill the ads and nag screens.

Installation

Go to the official adware-free JDownloader download page. Pick your operating system and the appropriate installer (you'll be taken to a MEGA page). Download the installer, run it, and follow the prompts. It will download the actual program files during setup, so expect it to take a few minutes. Make sure you're getting it from the official site to avoid bundled junk.

Debloating

Open JDownloader and navigate to Settings (top‑left) → Settings⚠️ Advanced Settings (left sidebar). If a warning appears, click Ok. You can also tick Don't show this again to skip it next time.

In the Filter settings search box at the bottom, look up each item below and disable it:

  1. Premium Alert – uncheck every checkbox that appears.
  2. Oboom – a host‑specific nag; uncheck it. If asked to confirm, tick Don't show this again and click Ok.
  3. Special Deals – uncheck any related options.
  4. Donate – change the value from Visible (Automode) to Hidden (Automode).
  5. Banner – uncheck everything. (This is the GraphicalUserInterfaceSettings: Banner setting.)
  6. Update Button Flashing – uncheck it to stop the flashing update icon.

Once you've applied all changes, close JDownloader completely: right‑click its system tray icon and choose Exit, or use File → Exit from the menu. (You can also set the close behaviour in Settings → User Interface if you prefer it to minimise to tray instead of asking each time.)

Relaunch the app. It should now be ad‑free.

A major update can sometimes re‑enable these settings. If ads come back, repeat the debloating steps. Once you know the routine, it takes about half a minute.

Troubleshooting Tips

If the installer or settings give you trouble, here are the most likely fixes:

  1. Installer won't run – run it as administrator. If your antivirus blocks it, temporarily disable it (the official installer is clean).
  2. Settings don't save – fully exit the application (right‑click the tray icon and choose Exit, not just close the window), then reopen and try again.
  3. Ads return after an update – repeat the debloating steps. Updates occasionally reset the settings.
